One - Open your owner's manual to the general information section. Here, you'll find detailed information describing the location of the engine serial number. Two - Look for the serial number on the lower portion of the engine, which is called the crankcase. Newer Honda models (1990 and above) often have it stamped on the rear of the crankcase, usually close to the swing arm pivot point.
Older models (earlier than1990) may have it stamped on the lower left or lower right section of the crankcase.Three - Write the engine serial number down for further reference. The number should be in the following pattern, where X represents a letter, and # represents a number: XX##E - #######. E is a common designation for all engine serial numbers.Four - Look at the first four digits before the E. These digits represent the motorcycle model number.
The last character represents the year of the particular model. Refer to the Honda Motorcycle Model and Engine Code website for a list of these codes (see Resources).Five - Read the seven digits after the dash. These digits convey information regarding the engine casing. This information is important when ordering engine parts for your specific engine. As motorcycle manufacturers often alter engines within a specific model of motorcycle, this serial number is important.Six - Tell the Honda service center the engine serial number when ordering parts.
This ensures the correct replacement part.

This bike is a rare hot rod which was modified in the '60s with a period correct round barrel 441 engine. It's a nice older restoration that was never actually completed until I bought the bike. So there's not much time on it. Everything was gone through, including the engine.
It has no leaks and it runs and rides great. The front tire is new. The rear tire shows some weather checking. The battery is new and the electrical system has been upgraded to 12 volts. The muffler could be nicer and the front rim could be replated.
I have a clear, clean California title that is currently on non-op status. Please be aware of shipping costs and have your funds in place before bidding. Thanks for looking. Category-Engine441Posted Over 1 Month1968 BSA B44SS Shooting Star441cc single cylinder, runs great, 5,700 original miles100 psi compression - cold My father bought this bike new in 1968. He then sold it in 1975. Several years ago, I tracked it down and my brothers and I purchased it back as he had always missed it.
He passed away this past year and its just collecting dust. To my knowledge, and my dad's, it was never fully restored.
It has had several parts replaced. The original tank is off the bike and is used as a spare. The one on the bike was repainted several years ago. The bike runs great, I just rode it today (9/5/15) through all four gears. The shifter is setup reversed for some reason so first gear is up and the rest are down. It can be switched back by pulling off the cover and flipping the linkage (directions in the manual). Brakes work fine.
Needs new tires and a few small parts (kick starter rubber cover, shifter rubber cover, throttle cable routed correctly, etc.). This bike isn't a show winner but a true original and survivor. The chrome has some rust. The cylinder cases aren't polished. The tank paint is in really good shape, the frame is painted well and looks good.
Spares: spark plug, oil tank, side cover, fuel tank, levers, new handlebar There is also a new, OEM tool kit that took years to track down. All of the manuals will be included as well. The owner's manual, workshop manual, and spare parts books are BSA originals. There's also a new copy of the workshop manual. Dad would work out of the copy so the original stayed in good shape. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am no longer physically able to start the bike, Engine has good compression. The chrome needs polishing, possibly replating, gas tank needs paint but does not have rust, forks need to be rebuilt, gauges need to be rebuilt (odometer read apx 8000 miles before breaking during transport). 1971 RICKMAN METISSE WESLAKE 500cc BSA B44 Frame number: 1934 Engine number: 98246 As Tom White writes on motocrossactionmag.com: By the late 1950s, Englishmen Don and Derek Rickman had become world-class motocross riders, and with good design and fabrication skills, knew they could build something better. They soon introduced their Rickman Metisse (metisse is French for mongrel) chassis kit for British four-stroke engines. The Metisse pioneered such ideas as oil in the frame, fiberglass bodywork, narrow chassis width and nickel-plated Reynolds 530 tubing. The Rickman’s marketing plan was simple. The brothers would race the bikes on Sunday and sell them on Monday.
After a winning weekend, the public would literally line up to buy the Rickman machines. Possibly the ultimate Rickman Metisse was the Mark IV Weslake BSA B44 powered machine. The BSA powerplant was small, originally starting out as a 250cc single-cylinder, but would prove both powerful and reliable, especially when the Weslake 500cc top-end was added. Top of the line chassis components like Ceriani forks and Girling shocks were used and lightweight Akront alloy rims completed the package. Rickmans weren’t just kit bikes. They were great bikes. The bike offered was found languishing in a private collection for many years.
Properly stored in a dry environment with fluids drained it took very little to resurrect this rather special machine. The usual re-commissioning of brakes, suspension, carburetion and spark by a local marque expert was all it took. The engine has great compression, starts and runs easily. The bike is fast and handles well.
The previous owner built the bike up to be a fun road-going machine with the addition of a rare Flanders headlight and a taillight, which has since been removed. It also sports a twin leading shoe front brake and a 19” wheel. The bike comes with a clean, clear California road title!

Tough act, especially at a time when the market included four Japanese competitors that were pumping out increasingly improving products, something the Goldie never had to contend with. But the 441 did well as a dual-purpose model in America, even making it onto enduro courses with some success. Eric Cheney never worked for any motorcycle manufacturer, preferring to make motorcycles in his own eccentric way.
His greatest success came after the BSA competition department had closed. The venture was uniquely British.
The bikes were designed and built on a shoestring budget in little more than a domestic garage. But the results were spectacular.
Each handbuilt motorcycle took over 400 man-hours to complete. The bike offered here is Cheney’s 45th built.
Of 1967 vintage, this Mark 2 machine has been maintained, raced and modified by someone who obviously knew what they were doing. A stronger Triumph leftside engine cover was fitted to the 1967 441 Victor motor, and for reliability and tune a new Amal carb was installed. Modifications to suspension are Ceriani forks up front and Curnutt rear shocks. Wheels have a BSA lightweight rear hub and twin leading shoe brake fitted to the front. Both have fresh tires, and the original front wheel accompanies the bike. The bike is offered in great condition, having just been gone through by a British bike specialist.
The usual re-commissioning of brakes, suspension, carburetion and spark was all it took. The engine has great compression, starts and runs easily. The bike is fast and handles well. BSA Serial Numbers Engine and Frame NumbersPick a year if you have a general understanding of their meaning or readthe follow general understanding below:BSA used a system of letters and numbers for yearly identification of theirmachines. This information combined with the yearly numbers below should help youidentify the year and model of your machine. The Frame Numbers are alway stamped. If you find raised numbers, these are casting part numbers.Up until 1968 it is rare forthe engine and frame number to be identical and where the frame is shared byseveral models the codes start with the smallest model e.g. All A series modelshave A7 or A50 prefixes with the exception of the Rocket Gold Star and SuperFlash. On most BSA's the frame number is located in the following places.FRAME NUMBERSPre war: Frame Number is located on the front topframe member either by the front seat stay or by the steering head.1950's: Located on the front down tube below orin front of the gas tank. An exception to this is the early Bantams where the framenumber is between the front engine mounting plate.1960-65: Located by the steering head reinforcingplate or front down tube.
Some Bantam's frame numbers are on the engine mounting plate.1965-1968: The Frame numbers are usually locatedon the front engine mounting lug.1968 on: Frame Number is on front enginemounting lug. The engine and frame numbers are the same from 1968 on.1971 on: The Frame Number in the 'oil in frame'models is located on the steering head stem. The oil in frame B-series are stampedon the propstand bracket. The Number includes an Year and Month code. Samedesignation as Triumph from these years. (see Triumph Part Numbers for clear understanding).ENGINE NUMBERSEngine numbers are usually by the crankcase mouth on theprimary side. Exceptions are the Bantams which could be stamped on the frontmounting point or just behind the crankcase mouth. That's It.

Now available (in test mode):Find out when a bike was assembled and shipped- from information in the orginal factory recordsIn 1969 the BSA and Triumph factories moved to a common numberingsystem used for both engines and frames. This system was used throughout the productionrun of the Tridents and the Rocket 3s.Engine and Frame numbers are composed of a model identifier,a two character date code (month and year) and a five digit, sequential serialnumber. On some models the model identifier appears at the beginning and on othermodels the model identifier appears at the end.
The date code always appears immediatelypreceding the five digit, sequential serial number. Frame and Engine numbers would have matched whenthe bike left the factory. The two formats: Examples:T160 KK06100DG02010 T150VThe Date CodeThe first code letter indicates the month of manufacture. The second code letter indicates the model year of the bike. The model year started in August of the preceding year - or whenever the factory came back towork after the summer break - and ran through July. For example:ACxxxxx indicates January and a 1969 model year bike. Itwould have been shipped in January of 1969.KHxxxxx indicates September and a1973 model year bike - this bike would have been shipped in September of 1972.LetterMonthModel YearAJanuary1979BFebruary1980CMarch1969DApril1970EMay1971GJune1972HJuly1973JAugust1974KSeptember1975NOctober1976PNovember1977XDecember1978The process appears to have gone something like this: As an enginewas completed on the engine production line it was stamped with the five digit sequentialserial number. The engines were then stored - awaiting buildup into a frame. As the framewas completed as a completed rolling chassis an engine was pulled from storage andinstalled in the frame. As a result the engines were not always used in exact numericalsequence.
When the engine was added to the frame the month and model year code was added - as was themodel identifier. This would explain why sometimes bikes with early serial numbers were shipped a couple ofdays later than bikes with subsequent serial numbers. The last BSA Triples. The last batch of BSA Triples shipped to the US market went out in twoshipments in early November 1971. The bulk of these bikes were shipped on 1st November.Another three bikes were sent the following day. These were the last of the BSA Triples destinedfor the USA.After that, about another 200 bikes were built and shipped to various other markets before BSA closedit's doors forever. The last shipment of four bikes was on 8th September 1972.The last Triumph Triples. The last Triumph Tridents were T160s. Production for this model was started, as usual, in Augustof the preceding year (1974) and ran through July 1975.
However, some of the very last bikes were builtin late 1975 and into early 1976. These bikes will have 'N' as the model year - even though there wasno official 1976 model year for the T160. All told, about 7,500 T160s were built.A word of warning.Be careful about relying on a specific serial number to validateyour bike's age. The original records are the best place to go if you have doubts.Although even these records contain human error.

Often, if the official 'engine stamper'stamped the same serial number two times in a row, they simply used different months tomake those bike's numbers different. There is one instance of two 1972 Rocket 3s that werestamped with the same serial number and the same month/year combination - identicalengine numbers! To make matters worse, both of these bikes were originally shipped todealers in the same country - the UK.Here's an engine where the serial number wassupposed to be '014xx'. Our reliable 'worker' apparently gotdistracted and stamped the '4' twice in a row - ending up with'044xx'.
They then triedto correct the mistake by stamping a '1' over the first'4' - it doesn't show too well in the photo as it merges with thedownstroke of the '4'.The only reason this was noticed wasbecause '044xx' is too high a number for the date code of'AC' and, of course, it doesn't appear in the factory records.A '1' overstamped on a '4'. The outline of the'1' has been highlighted in red.The earliest run of BSA Triples were assembled in varying months -but were collectively stamped with a given month ID.
Who knows?Interestingly, again in the case of BSA Rocket 3s, some very late1971 engines were used for the first 1972 models. The production run of 1971 bikes endedwith A75R JE01184. However, some engines that had already been stamped prior to 01184 werenot used for 1971 bikes but instead were used for the very first 1972 model bikes. Sothese very first 1972 bikes have oddly high serial numbers (such as 01172) - higher thanthe production run of 'normal' 1972 bikes which ran from 00101 to 00634.
